An observant friend has already commented on this blog that I tend to ruin CD's. That is true. When I find a CD I like I listen to it over and over again, exclusively, until I am so sick of it that I almost can't stand to listen to it.
I have zero music abilities. (I confess I can play one-handed melodies on the piano with simple sheet music after years of piano lessons, but that is the limit of my giftings.) So, for my personal worship time I am completely reliant on CD music to lead me. I can listen to almost any kind of music as long as it has God focused words about his bigness, otherness or majesty.
Some CD's that I have "ruined" this year (that I highly recommend):
Starfield
Watermark - The Purest Place
Chris Tomlin - Arriving
Shawn McDonald - Simply Nothing
McDonald's album has had a tremendous impact on my personal worship this last semester. It has prompted prayers in me and a state of reverence before the Lord that is normally difficult for me to attain while doing dishes or laundry. So it is fitting that my New Year's prayer is wrapped up in one of the songs:
I want to serve you, my God
I want to give you everything
I want to serve you, my King
I want to serve you, my Lord
I want to give you everything
Here I am with my arms open wide. . .
Won't you make me new, won't you make me true
Jesus, won't you make me like you
God, this year has brought moments of knowing you more, moments of hearing your voice, moments of being dependent on the bible for deep truth, correction, and healing for the deepest places in my heart. My prayer is that those moments would increase, intensify, and string into a life that is marked of YOU and not of me.

It's amazing to see the impact music has on our spiritual lives. I cannot tell you how many time when I have been abroad that I have had music bring my soul into the very presence of God. I think some artists have a way of bringing their own personal experiences to their music in such a way that we feel the lyrics as a cry from our own heart. I believe this same concept is responsible for allowing people to rest in the Psalms. McDonald is amazing though. Him and Crowder help bring me into the very presence of God.
