Tonight at our life group, the wives affirmed some of the traits we love most in our guys. I wrote mine out and thought I would share them here.
Father’s Day 2008
When I met you, and later that same day when I decided to marry you, I didn’t have the foresight to think much about what kind of father you would be someday. I just knew that I loved you and wanted to be with you always.
However, you are an incredible father, and there are many things I love about you in that role. There are many things I could say, but I’ve picked a few of my favorite things that I love about you as a father especially for today.
1. You play with the boys like you are still a little boy. You ARE really still a little boy, aren’t you? I love that you jump on the trampoline with them. I love that you roll with them in the grass. I love that you let them crawl in bed with us and let them “tickle fight” with you. They crave your attention and it makes me smile that you have such a good time giving it to them.
2. You discipline well. I love that when you discipline the boys you can make them laugh demonstrating to them how ridiculous it was for them to make that particular bad choice. In an instant, I can see their conviction as you explain their sin. Then after the punishment and the hug, you joke with them until they are laughing again. The ability to balance grace and firmness is a precarious line to walk, but I think you do a wonderful job.
3. I’m so grateful that you love scripture enough to memorize it. There is nothing that is more important to teach the boys than the Word of God. I’m so thankful that you consistently memorize verses as an example and that you have high expectations for us to memorize things together. It makes us a stronger family.
4. I love that you are inspired by great stories and great people. I think one of the best things that we can do for their education is to read to them and also for them to see us read. I think it is one of the best things that we can do to help their spiritual growth as well. I know that you will eventually introduce them to all of your heroes in the faith including guys like George Muller, Hudson Taylor, Brother Yun, and Watchman Nee. All of these men are from another time and another place, so the only way that our boys can be discipled by them, is through their stories. They will be able to walk with these men in your books and look at the notes in the margins (and your rampant underlining!) and know that you have walked with these great men too.
You are an amazing father and I love you!

what a fabulous list, Tyra. Happy Father's Day, Bobby, and thanks for being a wonderful dad in front of hundreds of college students, so we/they can see what the Lord had in mind for daddies. Hope y'all had a fun celebration!
Amen Tyra & Sarah! Thanks for sharing this Tyra - and I hope you know how your willingness to share your lives and your family with so many has shaped the way that we will someday parent! Love you guys!
That is precious Tyra...Terri
I second what was said above...
Even though this is an entry for Father's Day, I missed Mother's Day so I want this comment to be a "Parent's Day" comment: Seeing how the both of you interact with your boys and especially, seeing the things they do or hearing the things they say, confirmed to me that God was not only at the center of your family, but also, all around you. When I see you love on your boys, the love is so great that I can even feel it, as it overflows. I want to say so much more, but I'll just say keep up the good work with your kids, as you keep up the GOOD work. Take care. Hugs & prayers, Melissa C.
