Sights of the City

These two friends are out for a stroll together. Aren’t they precious? “Good girls” here dress very modestly. They would consider a woman in public wearing only shorts and a sleeveless shirt to be basically naked . . . and also a very bad person.

Women decorate their hands and feet for special occasions with the herb henna. It is a powder that is mixed with lemon juice and rose water and then pumped out through a modified syringe. The beautiful designs stain your skin a reddish brown color.

This amazing structure is a place of worship in a nearby city. The green tile retractable roof opens for a view of the sky. It can hold 25,000 worshippers inside. Up to 80,000 more can be accommodated outside. It is the third largest mosque in the world and cost over a half billion dollars to build.

These men are preparing for noon prayers. The faithful pray five times everyday, but especially on Friday they gather together at noon to pray and to hear a message. The overflow of men here causes the traffic to be redirected and the street closed for more space.
